Kolkata, July 9 (NationPress) Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, identified as the primary suspect in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case, who received a life sentence from a trial court in Kolkata earlier this January, has now appealed to the Calcutta High Court, contesting the trial court's ruling and requesting full acquittal from all allegations related to the case.
The appeal has been acknowledged, and the case is anticipated to be heard for the first time by the Calcutta High Court division bench comprising Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi next week, likely on Monday.
Following the trial court's life sentence announcement in January, Roy's legal representative, assigned by the State Legal Aid Services, expressed intentions to challenge the trial court's verdict at the Calcutta High Court.
Now, five months post the life sentence declaration, Roy's attorney has proceeded to the Calcutta High Court to contest the trial court's ruling.
The remains of the female junior doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata were found in a seminar hall on the hospital grounds on the morning of August 9 last year.
Initially, the investigation was handled by the Kolkata Police, who arrested Roy.
Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
After extensive investigations, the CBI recognized him as the chief suspect in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case.
During the investigation, although the CBI apprehended the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, for allegedly tampering with evidence, both were granted 'default bail' by the trial court due to the CBI's failure to file supplementary charge sheets against them.
After prolonged hearings over several months, the trial court ultimately convicted Sanjay Roy for rape and murder, sentencing him to life imprisonment in January.
Meanwhile, the CBI has also approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a death penalty for Roy.
