Kolkata, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to present a new progress report regarding the agency's ongoing investigation into the R.G. Kar rape and murder case on Monday at a special court in Kolkata. This follows the recent sentencing of a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who is the main convict in the case, to life imprisonment.

On February 20, the special court judge instructed the CBI to provide an updated report by February 24 after the victim's parents raised concerns, alleging that the CBI had not been keeping the court informed about the investigation's progress.

Having concluded the chapter regarding the conviction of the primary accused from the special court's perspective, the upcoming progress report is anticipated to shed light on the investigation concerning evidence tampering and alterations.

Previously, the CBI challenged the special court's ruling at the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy. The West Bengal government also approached the High Court with a similar request, but the court determined that only the CBI, as the investigating body, had the authority to present such a plea.

To recap, the body of the female doctor, who fell victim to a horrific rape and murder, was found in the seminar hall of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College on the morning of August 9 last year. Initially, the Kolkata Police conducted the investigation.

During that time, numerous allegations surfaced regarding significant evidence tampering by the city police. Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

The CBI has also apprehended Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, along with Abhijit Mondal, the former SHO of Tala Police Station, on accusations of tampering with evidence.

However, both were granted default bail by the special court due to the CBI's failure to file a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrests.

Mondal is currently out on bail, while Ghosh remains in judicial custody due to an ongoing and parallel investigation by the CBI regarding multi-crore financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
