Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata found civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a junior female doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital within the hospital grounds in August of last year. The victim’s parents expressed that a new phase in their quest for justice has now commenced.

"I lack sufficient words to express my gratitude to the judge of the special court. Sanjay Roy has been convicted. The initial step towards justice has been accomplished. Once the judge delivers the statement on Monday, we will enter the next stage of our pursuit for justice," the victim’s father shared with reporters immediately after the verdict was announced.

He elaborated on his belief that the journey towards justice has merely begun.

"We remain skeptical that Sanjay Roy is the sole perpetrator in this entire crime and broader conspiracy. Therefore, we have requested the continuation of the investigation. I demand that Sanjay Roy face the death penalty," the father asserted.

Moreover, legal experts agree with his assertion that the pursuit of broader justice is ongoing. While the conviction for the crime of rape and murder has been secured, the matter of evidence tampering remains unresolved.

According to sources, the Central Bureau of Investigation has already informed the special court that the possibility of filing a supplementary charge sheet regarding the evidence tampering is still available, keeping this aspect of the case open.

Last year, the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, were granted default bail by the same special court after the CBI failed to submit a supplementary charge sheet against them within 90 days of their arrest. Both Ghosh and Mondal faced accusations of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence while the initial inquiry was being conducted by the Kolkata Police before the CBI assumed control following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
