Kolkata, Jan 27 (NationPress) The parents of the woman junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, who was tragically raped and murdered on the hospital grounds, have come under fire from senior Trinamool Congress leaders on Monday due to their stance regarding the proposed death sentence for convict Sanjay Roy, as suggested by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government.
Following the conclusion of a hearing at a division bench of the Calcutta High Court regarding the admissibility of two concurrent petitions filed by the CBI and the West Bengal government advocating for the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the victim's father expressed that they do not wish for the death penalty and are instead calling for further investigation to identify the key perpetrators behind the entire conspiracy.
In response, Kunal Ghosh, the state general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, stated to reporters that the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment for cases of rape and murder.
“In every instance of rape and murder, it is typical for the victim's family to demand the death penalty; however, in the case of R.G. Kar, the victim's parents are opposing it. Who is influencing their stance? I have maintained from the outset that leftist and ultra-leftist factions are orchestrating their opinions,” he asserted.
He further alleged that the victim's parents are behaving as if they are the “spokespersons” for these entities.
“The inconsistency in their statements warrants a separate investigation,” Ghosh added.
Four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member and senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, Kalyan Banerjee, also condemned the victim's parents.
“It is regrettable that the parents of the victim are engaging in political maneuvering. Their comments now align with those of CPI-M leaders,” Banerjee remarked.
