Kolkata, Jan 28 (NationPress) The controversial and unconventional Trinamool Congress leader, Madan Mitra, on Tuesday engaged in a remarkable and inappropriate slander against the parents of the female doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who tragically lost her life after being raped and murdered within the hospital last year.
In response to the parents' statement against the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, Mitra implied that the parents' true intention might be to seek financial compensation for their loss.
“Their statements are inconsistent. Are they looking for compensation? If so, they should be direct about it. Hundreds of crores have already been collected for the doctors’ movement regarding this issue. If they wish, thousands of crores more could be raised and utilized for a worthy cause,” Mitra stated.
On Monday, the victim’s parents expressed their opposition to the death penalty, emphasizing that they wanted investigating agencies to delve deeper into the case to uncover the mastermind behind the entire plot.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress state general secretary Kunal Ghosh accused the victim’s parents of acting as “spokespersons” for leftist and ultra-leftist factions, while four-time Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee claimed they were “politicizing” the tragedy involving their daughter.
Mitra faced backlash for his comments aimed at the victim’s family from various sections of society.
BJP Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya commented that Mitra's remarks reveal the underlying culture that Trinamool Congress and the current West Bengal government embody.
“The victim’s parents, through their ongoing struggles since their daughter’s demise, have demonstrated that monetary compensation isn’t everything. Their opposition poses a challenge to the ruling party in the state,” he stated.
CPI-M Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate of Calcutta High Court, Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, noted that Mitra’s remarks reflect the internal culture of Trinamool Congress.
“This exemplifies a decomposed political culture that the party has adhered to over the years,” Bhattacharya remarked.
