Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) In a critical moment when leaders from the Trinamool Congress are criticizing the parents of the victim in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case for opposing the death penalty for the sole convict, Sanjay Roy, a party MLA has called for restraint in such remarks.
In an impactful post shared on a social media platform on Wednesday morning, Humayun Kabir, the Trinamool Congress legislator representing the Debra constituency in West Midnapore district, West Bengal, and a retired IPS officer, indirectly appealed to his party colleagues to avoid attacking the victim’s parents.
“Not everyone can understand the anguish of the parents who have lost their only daughter. If you cannot support them, at least refrain from criticizing them,” Kabir stated in his social media update.
Kabir’s remarks are being interpreted as highly significant, especially as senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress have been launching severe criticisms against the victim’s parents since they articulated their stance against the death penalty for Roy on January 27.
The most objectionable comment came from the controversial Trinamool Congress legislator Madan Mitra, who suggested on Tuesday that the parents' opposition to the death penalty might be motivated by a desire for substantial compensation for their loss.
In response, the victim’s father firmly countered, stating he would gladly pay money to Mitra if he could bring their daughter back.
Kabir’s appeal to stop the disparagement of the victim’s parents has sparked discussions within the state's corridors of power.
Nevertheless, in the same social media post, Kabir also urged the victim’s parents to avoid making political statements regarding the situation.
This retired IPS officer has consistently voiced his belief that Roy is the sole perpetrator of this heinous crime.
This is not the first instance where Kabir has spoken out against certain factions within his party on sensitive matters. Last December, he publicly opposed comments made by West Bengal’s municipal affairs and urban development minister, Firhad Hakim, regarding the demographic changes in the state and country.
Kabir’s previous post included a reference to a famous line by the iconic Indian actor Late Rajesh Khanna from the classic film 'Anand' — “Life should not just be long, but should have quality, Hujur Hakimji. We prefer quality over quantity.”
