Kolkata, Aug 3 (NationPress) The parents of the R.G. Kar rape and murder victim have urged all political parties, excluding the Trinamool Congress, to participate in the upcoming 'March to State Secretariat' on August 9, marking the first anniversary of this horrific tragedy.
The idea of this 'March to State Secretariat', led by the victim's parents, was initially proposed by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
The victim’s parents not only approved this initiative but also reached out to various political leaders and pressure groups, inviting them to join the protest march to Nabanna, located at Mandirtala in Kolkata, next to Howrah district, on August 9.
While presenting the proposal last month, Adhikari emphasized the need for the event to remain entirely apolitical, encouraging participation without any party or organizational flags.
On Sunday, the victim's parents asserted that a renewed movement is crucial, not just for their daughter’s quest for justice, but also due to the alarming rise in sexual harassment incidents within educational institutions, highlighted by the recent rape of a law college student in Kasba, South Kolkata, this past June.
However, some leaders within the Trinamool Congress have suggested that the victim's parents are being misled by opposition figures.
“Initially, they called for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. The CBI conducted its investigation, and the sole convict has been sentenced. Now, they claim dissatisfaction with the CBI's findings. Why the discontent?” questioned Jaiprakash Majumdar, state vice-president of the Trinamool Congress.
Notably, related cases concerning the R.G. Kar tragedy are ongoing in a trial court in Kolkata, the Calcutta High Court, and the Supreme Court. In the case of the Kasba Law College rape, the Detective Department of the Kolkata Police is currently investigating.
