Kolkata, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Kolkata police, along with the West Bengal Police, proposed an alternative venue for the protest rally organized by the parents of the R.G. Kar rape and murder victim, scheduled for August 9. This date marks the first anniversary of the tragic incident involving a junior woman doctor that occurred within the hospital premises last year.
The victim's parents have initiated a call for a Nabanna Avijan (March to the State Secretariat).
On Thursday, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court declined to impose a ban on the rally but noted that the state administration could suggest a different site for a peaceful demonstration instead of the State Secretariat.
During a press conference on Friday, attended by four senior officials from both police departments and led by Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, the authorities announced that they would not allow the March to State Secretariat. Instead, they proposed two alternative locations for the peaceful assembly.
One suggested venue is the Santragachi Bus Stand located in the Howrah district, situated at a distance from Mandirtala where the State Secretariat is located.
The second proposed venue is Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata.
According to Supratim Sarkar, the Additional Director General (South Bengal) of West Bengal Police, the organizers had not requested permission for the rally, and the police learned about it through media reports. As a result, the March to the State Secretariat is prohibited, and alternative sites are suggested. If the rally occurs at any location other than those recommended by the police, appropriate action will be taken.
The Kolkata Police Commissioner also stated that the police would not permit the proposed protest march from Hazra crossing in South Kolkata to Kalighat, near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence.
"We have communicated our decision to the organizers," Verma added.
