Kolkata, Aug 8 (NationPress) The inability of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to arrive at a rational conclusion regarding the revealed “larger conspiracy” behind the R.G. Kar rape and murder incident last August became the focal point of the “torch rally” that took place on the streets of Kolkata on Friday evening, just before the first anniversary of this tragic event on Saturday.
This new rallying cry stood in stark contrast to the various “slogans” that were used during countless protests last year. At that time, it was not the CBI, but rather the West Bengal administration and Kolkata Police who faced criticism for their inadequate investigation in the early stages, allegedly in an attempt to protect those orchestrating the “larger conspiracy”.
However, after a year, with the CBI merely endorsing Kolkata Police’s conclusion that civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was the only perpetrator in the heinous act of rape and murder, and failing to identify the masterminds behind the “larger conspiracy”, the demonstrators expressed feelings of frustration and disappointment.
The body of the victim, a junior woman doctor, was discovered in a seminar hall located within the hospital grounds on the morning of August 9 last year.
The torch rally, led by the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front (WBJDF) and attended by thousands of community members, commenced at 9 p.m. on Friday from College Square in North Kolkata. The gathering will conclude at the Shyambazar five-point crossing in North Kolkata, which is in proximity to the R.G. Medical College and Hospital. Participants will continue to gather at this location until 4 a.m.
The anger among the torch rally participants towards the CBI was intensified by the victim's parents, who returned to Kolkata earlier that day after meeting with the CBI director in Delhi.
“We conveyed to the CBI director that his agency has been completely ineffective regarding the tragedy involving our daughter. Initially, we had faith in the CBI. However, after one year, that trust has completely evaporated,” the victim’s mother expressed to reporters after their return from Delhi.
