Kolkata, March 25 (NationPress) The remarks by a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, which requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to specify whether the horrific R.G. Kar rape and murder incident from August of last year was categorized as “rape or gang-rape”, has spurred various organizations leading the movement to initiate a new wave of action.
In light of this, prominent protest groups have indicated that their forthcoming demonstrations will target the CBI. An official from the Medical Service Centre, one such organization, stated that the CBI has not yet submitted a supplementary charge sheet that sheds light on the broader conspiracy surrounding this tragedy.
“We have consistently argued that the CBI has been attempting to absolve themselves by merely ensuring the conviction and sentencing of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. The Calcutta High Court appears to have recognized this, as reflected in its comments on Monday. It is now time to reignite the movement on this matter, and if necessary, we will organize a series of protests similar to last year’s ‘reclaiming the night’. We urge the CBI to arrive at a swift and logical conclusion that exposes the greater conspiracy behind this tragedy,” he added.
Simultaneously, a representative from the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, another group that spearheaded last year’s protests, expressed that future initiatives will also scrutinize the state government’s attempts to impede a renewed investigation by raising legal challenges.
“On one side, the CBI has significantly failed to fulfill their responsibility in uncovering the broader conspiracy related to this tragedy. On the other hand, the state government seems intent on obstructing further investigation into the case. Our upcoming movement, which will be announced soon, will target both the CBI and the state government,” asserted an activist.
On Monday, the state government’s attorney and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee argued that the state was not against further investigation. However, he questioned whether this could occur post the completion of the trial in a special court.
The victim’s family also expressed strong disapproval of the state government’s legal stance. “The state government claims to have no objection to further investigation, yet it raises questions about the legality of conducting such an investigation. Their position lacks clarity. This ambiguous approach has been apparent since our daughter's body was discovered within the hospital grounds on the morning of August 9 last year,” remarked the victim's father following Monday's hearing.
