Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) A single-judge bench of Calcutta High Court will commence a hearing on the petition filed by the parents of the R.G. Kar rape and murder victim, challenging the progress made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in this case starting Monday.

Last week, the Supreme Court allowed for a concurrent hearing at the Calcutta High Court, prompting the parents' legal team to present a new petition before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.

Justice Ghosh accepted the case, marking Monday as the initial day for this renewed hearing.

Previously, Justice Ghosh had declined to hear the matter as it was under consideration at the apex court. However, with the Supreme Court's recent endorsement for parallel hearings, the case can now proceed in multiple forums, including the ongoing proceedings in a special court in Kolkata.

Following the apex court's decision last week, CBI officials have intensified their investigation efforts. In the past week, they have summoned and interrogated a total of seven nursing staff members and eight security personnel who were present at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on the night of the tragic incident involving the woman doctor.

Sources familiar with the situation indicate that the results from these interrogations will be included in a supplementary charge sheet regarding potential evidence tampering, which the agency is anticipated to submit to the special court in Kolkata shortly.

The body of the junior woman doctor was discovered in a seminar hall on the premises of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on August 9 of the previous year.

An initial investigation was conducted by a special team from the Kolkata Police, which led to the arrest of the sole accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. However, the investigation was later transferred to the CBI following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

Recently, a special court found Roy guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Nevertheless, the CBI has contested this ruling in the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for Roy.

Currently, the CBI is probing the potential tampering and alteration of evidence during the preliminary investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police and is expected to present a supplementary charge sheet in the near future.
