Kolkata, June 24 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday that its investigation team, which is looking into the horrific rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College last August, has no objections to the request made by the victim’s parents to examine the crime scene.
On Monday, the attorney representing the victim’s family, senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, submitted a petition to the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh. This petition included two requests: the first for an expedited hearing regarding the case, and the second for the parents’ request to inspect the crime scene.
Given the ongoing investigation by the CBI into the broader conspiracy surrounding the rape and murder, the bench sought the CBI's perspective on the parents’ plea to survey the crime scene.
On Tuesday, the CBI's counsel conveyed to the court that their investigative team has no issue with the parents' request. Subsequently, Justice Ghosh instructed the victim’s parents to submit a written application to the court regarding this matter.
The horrific case of rape and murder is currently under review in three distinct courts. The first is the trial court in Kolkata, where earlier this year, Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in the case, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The trial court is now deliberating on the larger conspiracy, focusing on how evidence was altered and tampered with during the initial investigation by the Kolkata Police before the CBI took over the case.
Two additional cases related to this issue are pending before the Calcutta High Court. One pertains to the victim’s parents seeking a new investigation into the rape and murder, while the other involves the CBI’s appeal for a death sentence for the convict.
Concurrent hearings are also taking place at the Supreme Court.
The CBI has submitted four status reports to the trial court detailing the progress of its investigation into the larger conspiracy linked to the crime. However, the victim’s family’s counsel has previously accused the CBI of being less than forthright in their reports.
There have also been allegations that the CBI has conducted the investigation in a lackadaisical manner from the very beginning.
