R.G. Kar Incident: Family of Victim to Approach Supreme Court Over CBI Investigation Concerns

Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) The family of the junior woman doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who was the victim of a heinous rape and murder within the hospital grounds in August last year, has taken the decision to petition the Supreme Court of India to bring attention to the unclear aspects of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case.
The parents made this decision last month after the Calcutta High Court indicated that their request for a new investigation would only be considered if specific details were clarified.
A single-judge bench led by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh noted that they would only proceed if it was determined whether the CBI investigation was being monitored by the court.
An additional hearing is slated for this month, during which the bench is anticipated to clarify if they will address the petition. In the meantime, the victim's family has opted to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
The victim’s father shared with the media on Friday that they are likely to approach the apex court next Monday, feeling compelled to take this step due to uncertainties surrounding the Calcutta High Court's willingness to hear their case.
CBI had named civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the sole prime suspect in the rape and murder. While they believe he is certainly guilty, there are concerns about the CBI's ability to file supplementary charge sheets against two individuals accused of tampering with evidence, which was not done within the mandated 90 days.
Recently, a special court in Kolkata granted “default bail” to the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal, due to the CBI's failure to submit supplementary charge sheets within the required timeframe following their arrests.
The allegations against Ghosh and Mondal pertain to misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial inquiry conducted by the Kolkata Police.
