Calcutta High Court Requests CBI's Input on Petition for Renewed Investigation into R.G. Kar Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Thursday requested the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to respond to a petition submitted earlier the same day, which calls for a renewed investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata that took place within the hospital premises in August.
In their petition, the victim's parents expressed their profound dissatisfaction with the ongoing investigation conducted by the CBI. A single-judge bench presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh has instructed the central agency to present its perspective to the court.
The next hearing in this matter is set for December 24, by which time the CBI is required to submit its response and report to Justice Ghosh's bench.
The victim's parents have raised concerns that, since the trial process has already commenced and witness testimonies are being recorded, it is crucial for the Calcutta High Court to intervene promptly to prevent the investigation from veering off course.
Following a special court in Kolkata granting default bail last week to two individuals accused of evidence tampering—due to the CBI's failure to file a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrest—the victim's family and representatives from the state's medical community have accused the CBI of significant incompetence.
The CBI has faced intense criticism for not submitting the supplementary charge sheet against the former and controversial Principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal. After failing to meet the deadline for the charge sheet, both Ghosh and Mondal were granted default bail by a special court last week.
While Ghosh remains incarcerated due to a parallel investigation by the CBI concerning financial misconduct at R.G. Kar, Mondal has been released on bail.
Recently, the victim's family has also appointed a new attorney to represent them at the Supreme Court.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, a collective body of junior doctors in the state advocating for this issue, has threatened to resume protests which they had previously suspended in consideration of public interest.
