Hearing on R.G. Kar Case Scheduled Before New Chief Justice Today

Kolkata, Dec 10 (NationPress) After a span of 33 days, the significant case regarding the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata is scheduled for hearing before a bench led by the new Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, on Tuesday.
The second judge on this newly formed bench is Justice Sanjay Kumar. The last hearing occurred at the Supreme Court on November 7, presided over by then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, alongside Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra.
This upcoming hearing takes place while the trial process concerning the rape and murder case is already underway at a special court in Kolkata, where proceedings are being conducted on a fast-track basis with daily hearings.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to present a new status report regarding the investigation's progress at the upcoming hearing before the two-judge bench on Tuesday. This marks the seventh status report submitted by the CBI to the Supreme Court regarding this case.
In its initial charge sheet, the CBI has named Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, as the “sole prime accused” in the rape and murder case. However, the CBI is also investigating the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abjijit Mondal, for allegedly misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial inquiry by Kolkata Police.
A special court in Kolkata has extended the judicial custody of both Ghosh and Mondal until December 13. The CBI's representative informed the court that investigators are currently scrutinizing footage from the CCTVs installed at R.G. Kar.
The doctor’s body was discovered under mysterious circumstances on the morning of August 9 in the seminar hall of the R.G. Kar premises.
