R.G. Kar Medical College Case: Verdict Scheduled for January 18

Kolkata, Jan 9 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata is set to deliver the verdict on January 18 regarding the heinous rape and murder of a junior female doctor associated with R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, an incident that transpired in August of the prior year.

This verdict will come 68 days after the commencement of the trial on November 11 of the previous year.

The lifeless body of the doctor was found in the seminar hall located within the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9 last year.

The initial probe was conducted by a special investigation team (SIT) from the Kolkata Police, who apprehended civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the primary suspect in this case.

Subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation, identifying Sanjay Roy as the sole prime accused in its only charge sheet regarding the crime of rape and murder.

During the investigation, CBI officials also arrested the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, along with Abhijit Mondal, the previous SHO of Tala Police Station, on allegations of evidence tampering. However, both individuals were recently granted default bail by the special court due to the CBI's failure to submit a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrests.

The CBI faced severe backlash from various societal segments following this development. Ghosh remains incarcerated due to a separate investigation by the CBI concerning financial irregularities at R.G. Kar, while Mondal has been released on bail.

In the meantime, the victim's parents have approached both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court, seeking a renewed investigation to uncover the potential “larger” conspiracy behind this crime.
