Trial in R.G. Kar Incident: Statements from 50 Witnesses Finalized

Kolkata, Dec 18 (NationPress) The recording of statements from a total of 50 witnesses has been finalized at a special court in Kolkata during the ongoing trial concerning the horrific rape and murder of a junior female doctor at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital that occurred within the hospital's premises in August this year.

As the trial is being held in camera, behind closed doors, no updates on the proceedings have surfaced thus far. The trial is being conducted on a fast-track basis, with sessions occurring daily.

It has been reported that the testimony of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who is the sole prime accused in the rape and murder case as per the only charge sheet submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), may be recorded on Friday.

Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that during this process, additional witnesses, if proposed by Roy's legal counsel, might be added to the list for their statements to be recorded.

Recently, the special court granted bail to two individuals accused of tampering with evidence in the case, as the CBI did not submit the supplementary charge sheet, which included the names of the two, within 90 days of their arrest.

The two individuals are Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, the former SHO of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence while the initial inquiry was being conducted by the Kolkata Police.

While Ghosh remains in judicial custody due to an ongoing parallel investigation by the CBI regarding financial irregularities at R.G. Kar, Mondal has been released on bail.

This development has sparked significant protests from the public, particularly from representatives of the medical community. The West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front, which represents junior doctors in the state, has already threatened to resume their cease-work protests that were previously halted for the greater public good.
