R.G. Kar Medical College Tragedy: Junior Doctors and Victim's Father Demand Justice Through Protests

Kolkata, Dec 14 (NationPress) Intensified and aggressive protests on the streets are now seen as the sole option to achieve justice for the doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, who tragically suffered a brutal rape and murder within the hospital grounds back in August, according to junior doctors and the victim's family on Saturday.

This realization comes after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a charge sheet within the stipulated 90 days against two individuals accused of manipulating evidence in the rape and murder case. Consequently, a special court in Kolkata granted “default bail” to the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the ex-SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, on Friday.

On Saturday, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), the leading organization driving this movement, organized a protest rally at the CBI’s special crime unit office located at CGO complex Salt Lake, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, which was attended by the victim's father.

“More assertive protests on the streets are the only path left for us. We must take to the streets on a daily basis once more, just as we had previously,” remarked the victim's father, expressing his concerns about Ghosh and Mondal receiving bail due to the unsatisfactory pace of the CBI investigation.

The victim's father also mentioned that his family is contemplating legal avenues to challenge the lower court's decision in a higher court.

Debasish Halder, a prominent figure in the junior doctors' movement, expressed satisfaction at the massive turnout of ordinary citizens joining their protest rally. “We are conducting this protest to convey to the CBI that the legal system cannot be manipulated into a mockery in this way. We wish to communicate that the public stands with us, and in the upcoming days, we will organize even larger protests,” he stated.

The leadership of WBJDF has already suggested the possibility of resuming their cease-work protests, which they had previously suspended for the greater public good.
