Tensions Escalate Amidst Concurrent Protests by Congress and SUCI(C) Outside CBI Offices

Kolkata, Dec 14 (NationPress) Tensions escalated after simultaneous protests led by Congress and the Social Unity Centre of India (Communist) occurred outside two CBI offices in and around Kolkata on Saturday afternoon. These protests were in response to the bail granted to two individuals accused of evidence tampering in the case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor associated with R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.

The Congress supporters gathered outside the CBI's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) office at Nizam Palace in central Kolkata, while activists from SUCI held a protest rally at the CBI's Special Crime Unit office located in the Central Government Office (CGO) complex at Salt Lake.

Both protests shared a common theme, with members from both parties criticizing the special court's decision to grant default bail to former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, on Friday. This decision was made because the CBI failed to submit a charge sheet within the mandated 90 days.

In response to these developments, the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front (WBJDF) announced that they would conduct day-long protests on Saturday, targeting the CBI.

While the rally at the CGO complex remained relatively peaceful, tensions escalated at Nizam Palace when confrontations arose between the police and Congress members. The police intervened to halt the Congress protesters from advancing beyond a certain point, leading to altercations.

Subsequently, Congress supporters staged a sit-in demonstration on the road in front of Nizam Palace, obstructing both sides of the road and causing significant traffic congestion during peak hours.

Additional protests related to this issue are scheduled to take place throughout the day.
