R.G. Kar Incident: Judicial Custody of Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal Extended Until December 13

Kolkata, Dec 9 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata has decided to extend the judicial custody of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with Abhijit Mondal, the former SHO of Tala Police Station, until December 13. This extension is in relation to the horrific rape and murder of a junior woman doctor that occurred within the hospital grounds in August this year.
Both Ghosh and Mondal are under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly misleading the inquiry and tampering with evidence while the initial investigation was conducted by the Kolkata Police.
On Monday, legal representatives for Ghosh and Mondal submitted a bail application on their behalf.
Countering the bail request, the CBI attorney stated that the agency's investigators are currently analyzing hours of CCTV footage retrieved from cameras installed at R.G. Kar to uncover new evidence regarding potential tampering.
The defense counsels challenged the rationale behind the continued examination of the CCTV footage after 87 days since their clients' arrests, asserting that this alone warranted their release on bail. However, the special court judge dismissed this argument and prolonged the judicial custody of both individuals.
During the hearing, the CBI lawyer informed the special court that the investigative team has already scrutinized footage from eight CCTV cameras at R.G. Kar for eight days following August 9, when the victim's body was discovered in a seminar hall within the hospital premises. The footage is currently undergoing forensic analysis, according to the CBI counsel.
Ghosh was originally apprehended by the CBI due to financial irregularities at the hospital, before being implicated in the rape and murder case. Mondal was arrested on the same day after extensive questioning.
