Kolkata, March 12 (NationPress) Four individuals charged in the multi-crore financial irregularities case involving state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital have filed an exemption petition at a special court. These individuals include Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former Principal of R.G. Kar, along with his bodyguard and personal assistant Afsar Ali, and private contractors Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra.

Their legal representatives submitted the petition on Wednesday, requesting that their clients be exempted from the ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Previously, the CBI had presented a comprehensive charge sheet to the special court, labeling Ghosh as the mastermind behind the alleged scam. The process for framing charges and the subsequent trial is anticipated to commence soon.

The filing of the exemption petition by these four accused has introduced a new development in the case. The special court judge is scheduled to hear the petition on March 25.

Ghosh, along with the former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal, faced arrest by CBI officials in relation to the heinous rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar in August of the previous year.

Despite their arrest, both were granted default bail by another special court in Kolkata due to the CBI's failure to submit a supplementary charge sheet within 90 days of their arrest. While Mondal remains in custody on bail, Ghosh’s judicial custody continues because of his connections to the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case.

The primary allegations in this financial irregularities case include manipulations in the institute's tendering process, outsourcing infrastructure work while circumventing the state public works department, smuggling biomedical waste from the hospital, and the illicit sale of organs from unidentified bodies received for autopsy at inflated prices.
