RG Kar Case: Senior Medical Professionals to Initiate 10-Day Protest in Kolkata Starting Tuesday

Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, a collective of senior medical professionals in the state, is gearing up for a 10-day protest starting Tuesday to express their outrage against the “default bail” awarded last week by a special court in Kolkata to two individuals implicated in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

The accused, Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, are alleged to have interfered with evidence related to the horrific rape and murder of a female junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. They were granted bail because the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not file a charge sheet against them within the mandated 90-day period following their arrests.

The planned protest at Doreena Crossing in central Kolkata is expected to commence on Tuesday and run until December 26.

The doctors’ organization has already requested permission from the Kolkata Police to set up a platform for the demonstration in central Kolkata. An official from the association indicated that should police permission be denied, they will seek intervention from the Calcutta High Court.

On the previous Friday, the special court in Kolkata granted “default bail” to Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, the ex-SHO of Tala Police Station, due to the CBI's failure to submit a charge sheet within the 90-day timeframe following their arrests.

Both Ghosh and Mondal are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial probe conducted by the Kolkata Police.

The CBI has thus far filed only one charge sheet, identifying civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the “sole prime” suspect in the rape and murder case.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front, which represents junior doctors in the state, has already outlined their next steps in advocating for this issue, which includes engaging with the general public. They recently held a protest rally at the CBI’s special crime unit office in Salt Lake, located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata.

This Front has also warned of resuming “ceasework” protests that were previously suspended in consideration of the broader public interest. The parents of the victim have asserted that involving the public in street protests is the only viable route at this point.
