RG Kar Case: Medical Association May Approach Calcutta High Court Today After Police Deny Protest Permission

Kolkata, Dec 17 (NationPress) The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, a collective of senior medical professionals in the state, is likely to file a petition with the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday in response to the Kolkata Police's refusal to permit a 10-day sit-in demonstration aimed at protesting the 'default bail' granted to two suspects in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

The planned protest at Doreena Crossing in central Kolkata was set to commence on Tuesday evening and run until December 26.

An official from the association stated that in response to their email requesting permission for the sit-in, the city police declined, citing potential traffic issues in the area.

"In our correspondence, we assured the city police that the sit-in would be conducted peacefully on one side of the street, minimizing any risk of traffic disruption or law and order issues. However, the police maintained that this time of year sees a significant influx of people due to Christmas and end-of-year festivities, and used these factors to justify their denial of permission. Consequently, we feel compelled to seek the court's intervention," the association representative remarked.

Last Friday, a special court in Kolkata granted 'default bail' to the former and controversial principal of R. G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, due to the CBI's failure to submit a charge sheet within the mandated 90 days following their arrests.

Both Ghosh and Mondal are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial probe conducted by the Kolkata Police.

To date, the CBI has submitted only one charge sheet, identifying civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the 'sole prime' accused in the rape and murder case.
