Kolkata Police Reject Doctors' Request to Extend Protest Over R.G. Kar Case

Kolkata, Dec 26 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police have officially denied the request from a doctors’ association to extend their protest regarding the R.G. Kar rape and murder case.

This ongoing protest aims to highlight the shortcomings of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in filing a charge sheet against Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, who are alleged to have tampered with evidence in the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Medical College and Hospital.

The sit-in demonstration at Doreena Crossing, organized by the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, an umbrella organization for practicing doctors in the state, is scheduled to conclude this evening.

A representative from the doctors' association indicated that they sent a formal request to the city police late Wednesday night seeking permission to prolong the sit-in protest.

However, the police responded on Thursday, stating their inability to grant permission due to unspecified reasons.

“We are currently exploring legal avenues to facilitate the continuation of our demonstration. Initially, the police also denied permission for our ongoing sit-in, but we later received authorization for it from the Calcutta High Court,” remarked a spokesperson for the doctors' coalition.

On Wednesday, another group, the West Bengal Doctors Forum, appealed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to rename “Doreena Crossing” to “Abhaya Crossing,” honoring the victim, referred to as “Abhaya” due to legal restrictions on revealing the names of rape or murder victims.

Recently, a special court in Kolkata granted default bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, the former SHO of Tala Police Station, as the CBI failed to file a supplementary charge sheet within the required 90 days post-arrest.

Both individuals are accused of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial probe conducted by the Kolkata Police.

This week, a report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) surfaced, raising questions about the identified “scene of crime” in the rape and murder case.

On the morning of August 9, 2024, the victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar and Hospital, leading both the Kolkata Police and the CBI to consider this location as the “scene of crime.”

However, the CFSL report submitted to the CBI indicated that there were no apparent signs of a struggle in the seminar room, according to sources.

In fact, the CFSL findings reinforce the concerns raised by some members of the medical community from the start, suggesting that the actual “scene of crime” might have been elsewhere and that the body was moved to the seminar hall to mislead investigators.
