Doctors' Forum Requests Renaming of Kolkata's Protest Hub to 'Abhaya Crossing'

Kolkata, Dec 25 (NationPress) The West Bengal Doctors' Forum, an organization representing medical professionals in the state, has recently sent an email to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urging that Dorina Crossing, a significant protest site in central Kolkata, be renamed to 'Abhaya Crossing'.

The junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, who tragically fell victim to a heinous rape and murder within the hospital grounds in August of this year, is referred to as “Abhaya”, as the legal framework in the country prohibits the disclosure of identities of victims of sexual assault.

The forum's leader mentioned that the meaning of “Abhaya” goes beyond its dictionary definition of a brave woman; it has evolved into a symbol of the quest for justice, safety, and dignity.

Thus, the forum advocates for the renaming of Dorina Crossing to “Abhaya Crossing”.

Currently, another group of doctors, the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, is staging a protest at Dorina Crossing, which is expected to continue until Thursday.

This protest addresses the failure of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a supplementary charge sheet regarding the two individuals accused of tampering with evidence in this case.

Recently, a special court in Kolkata granted “default bail” to the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, as the CBI did not file the supplementary charge sheet within the mandated 90 days from their arrests.

Both Ghosh and Mondal are implicated in misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial inquiry by the Kolkata Police.

This week, a report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CSFL) emerged, raising questions about the alleged “scene of crime” in the rape and murder case.

On the morning of August 9, 2024, the victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar and Hospital, leading both the Kolkata Police and the CBI to investigate the seminar hall as the “scene of crime”.

However, the CSFL's report submitted to the CBI has indicated a lack of any visible signs of struggle in the seminar room, according to sources familiar with the situation.

In fact, the CSFL report corroborates the concerns raised by many within the medical community in the state, suggesting that the actual “scene of crime” may have been elsewhere, and that the body was moved to the seminar hall to mislead the investigation.
