Kolkata, March 25 (NationPress) Asish Pandey, a junior doctor implicated in a multi-crore financial scandal at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, submitted an "exemption petition" seeking relief from the charges against him at a special court on Tuesday.

The case concerning the financial irregularities, initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was presented for hearing at the special court on Tuesday afternoon. During the proceedings, Pandey's legal representative filed the "exemption petition".

Pandey's attorney, Ananda Bandopadhyay, asserted that his client is innocent.

He is the fifth and final accused in this case to file an "exemption petition" seeking relief from the allegations.

Previously, four other accused persons, including the former and controversial principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh; his assistant and bodyguard Afsar Ali; and two private contractors, Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra, had also submitted "exemption petitions".

The next court session regarding this matter is scheduled for April 5.

The CBI commenced its investigation into the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case last year following an order from the Calcutta High Court.

Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate also initiated its own inquiry by filing an enforcement case information report.

According to the charge sheet, the CBI has identified Ghosh as the leading figure behind the scam.

The primary allegations in the R.G. Kar financial irregularities case include manipulation of the tendering process at the medical institution, outsourcing of infrastructure work while bypassing the state Public Works Department, illegal disposal of biomedical waste, and the illicit sale of organs from unidentified bodies arriving at the hospital morgue for autopsy at inflated prices.

There are claims that the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last August is linked to these financial irregularities.

Many in the medical community have suggested that the victim was targeted because she uncovered disturbing secrets about influential parties involved in the financial misconduct.
