Kolkata, June 23 (NationPress) The parents of a junior woman doctor at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who tragically fell victim to rape and murder within the hospital premises, have approached the Calcutta High Court with two significant appeals.
The first aspect of their appeal, submitted to the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh by their lawyer, senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, requests a fast-track hearing regarding the case, which is currently under the court's consideration.
The second aspect seeks authorization for the parents to visit the alleged crime scene within the hospital grounds to conduct their own assessment.
Justice Ghosh has accepted the petition.
At present, this heinous case of rape and murder is being reviewed in three different judicial venues. The initial case is at the trial court in Kolkata, where earlier this year, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the sole convict in this case, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The ongoing proceedings at the trial court involve a broader conspiracy regarding the alteration and tampering of evidence during the initial investigative phase by Kolkata Police, before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe.
Two distinct cases associated with this incident are currently before the Calcutta High Court: one is the appeal from the victim’s parents for a new investigation into the rape and murder, and the other pertains to the CBI’s request for a death sentence for the convict.
Simultaneously, the matter is also being heard at the Supreme Court.
The CBI has submitted four status reports to the trial court detailing the progress of their investigation into the broader conspiracy underlying the crime. However, the victim’s family lawyer has previously accused the agency of being misleading in their subsequent reports.
Furthermore, the CBI has faced criticism for conducting the investigation in a lackadaisical manner from the outset.
