Kolkata, April 30 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday requested further clarifications from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding its ongoing investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a junior female doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, which occurred within the hospital premises in August of last year.
During the hearing before the single-judge bench presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, the legal representative for the victim’s family contended that despite later forensic reports indicating the potential involvement of more than one individual in the brutal crime, the CBI had not adequately pursued this angle.
To date, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy has been the sole identified suspect and has already been convicted for the crime. The CBI's current investigation phase centers on the issue of evidence tampering that occurred during the initial investigation by the Kolkata Police before the case was transferred to the agency by the Calcutta High Court.
Following the arguments presented, Justice Ghosh instructed the victim's parents' attorney to submit their points and arguments in an affidavit to the court. After reviewing it, he mandated that the CBI provide a report clarifying whether its officials have investigated these matters or if there remains room for further inquiry in the future.
The next hearing is set for May 16.
Justice Ghosh remarked that, given the prolonged duration of the trial in lower court, which resulted in one conviction, there is a need for specific details for a renewed investigation in this regard.
Roy has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court. However, the CBI has already appealed to the Calcutta High Court to contest the trial court's ruling and seek the death penalty for Roy.
