Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday informed Calcutta High Court that the female junior doctor of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata was not a victim of gang rape.

The single-judge Bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh was presiding over the case related to the rape and murder of a woman doctor that occurred in August of the previous year.

Earlier, during the initial hearing on March 24, Justice Ghosh had instructed the CBI to provide clarity on whether the incident involved rape or gang rape.

On Friday, the CBI confirmed to the same Bench that the possibility of gang rape was ruled out in this case.

Furthermore, the CBI noted that the ongoing investigation is focused on the potential tampering of evidence that occurred when the initial inquiry was conducted by the Kolkata Police.

On Friday afternoon, the CBI submitted a three-page status report to a special court in Kolkata detailing the investigation's progress.

This report was presented at the same court that recently sentenced the lone convict in the case, Sanjay Roy, to life imprisonment.

The CBI also delivered the case diary to Justice Ghosh’s Bench as requested during the hearing on March 24.

In clarifying that the incident did not involve gang rape, the agency stated that their findings were supported by a report from a forensic team of 14 specialists who reviewed various documents collected by the investigative officials.

The CBI counsel also informed Justice Ghosh’s Bench that the current investigative phase pertains to the post-offense conduct related to evidence tampering, which may indicate a larger conspiracy behind the crime.

The next hearing in this matter at Justice Ghosh’s Bench is scheduled for two weeks later.

The Bench also directed that the initial investigation's case diary be presented at the next hearing.

To recap, the victim’s body was discovered in the seminar hall within the hospital on the morning of August 9 last year.

A Special Investigation Team from the Kolkata Police initiated the first probe and arrested Sanjay Roy.

However, the investigation was later transferred to the CBI following an order from the Calcutta High Court, and Roy was moved from city police custody to CBI custody.

Recently, a special court in Kolkata sentenced Roy to life imprisonment, but the CBI has since appealed the court's decision to the Calcutta High Court, seeking the death penalty for him.
