Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) - A special court in Kolkata, which recently convicted and sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in the R.G. Kar junior woman doctor rape and murder case, has now instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to present a new progress report regarding the investigation on February 24.

Legal experts suggest that since the court has already delivered a sentence for the convicted individual regarding the primary charge of rape and murder, the new report may focus on the potential tampering of evidence linked to the case.

The decision for the fresh report comes after a complaint was lodged by the victim's family counsel, who accused the CBI of failing to provide regular updates to the court about the investigation's progression.

Responding to this complaint, the court mandated that the CBI must submit a new progress report on the specified date.

The tragic incident, involving the young doctor who suffered a horrific rape and murder, was initially investigated by the Kolkata Police after her body was discovered in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9 last year. However, numerous claims arose regarding significant evidence tampering during the police's investigation. Subsequently, the CBI assumed control of the case following an order from the Calcutta High Court.

The CBI has arrested the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, along with the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, on charges of manipulating and altering evidence.

Nonetheless, both individuals were granted default bail by the special court as the CBI did not submit a supplementary charge sheet within the 90-day timeframe following their arrests.

While Mondal is currently out on bail, Ghosh remains in judicial custody due to ongoing investigations by the CBI concerning substantial financial irregularities at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital.
