Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court on Monday has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to present a detailed report regarding the rape and murder of the junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, specifically clarifying whether it was a case of "rape" or "gang-rape". The victim's father expressed significant relief at this particular court observation.
He stated, "Hope for justice still exists. We were unable to convince the CBI officials that what happened to our daughter was nothing less than an 'institutional murder'. The primary intention was more about 'murder' than 'rape'. Our daughter protested against the use of expired medications at the hospital that endangered patients’ health, leading to her murder. Despite our repeated appeals, the CBI did not investigate this angle. However, I hope the high court's remarks will prompt the CBI to take action now," he mentioned after the hearing.
He added, "The judge has instructed the CBI to find out how many individuals were involved and to take necessary actions. They are required to present the case diary in court by Friday. We have faith in the judiciary and believe that justice will prevail," the father stated.
The parents approached the court regarding their concerns about the slow investigation and alleged efforts to shield those responsible.
Meanwhile, the state government counsel and Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee indicated that the state government is not opposed to further investigation, though he questioned whether this could occur after the trial process in a special court has concluded. The father criticized the inconsistent stance of the state government.
"Sometimes they claim no objections, while at other times they raise issues. We are confused about their position. What investigation did they conduct in the initial five days? Do they even have the authority to question the probe?" he stated.
"On one side, the state government asserts it has no objections to further investigation. On the other, it questions the legal feasibility of conducting further investigations. The state government has not clarified its actual intentions. This contradictory behavior has been apparent since our daughter's body was discovered within the hospital premises on August 9 last year," the victim’s father expressed.
The victim’s mother also voiced her dissatisfaction with the investigation, accusing the hospital of torturing her daughter for rejecting counterfeit medicines, injections, and saline.
“The CBI has yet to conduct a thorough investigation. From the outset, we insisted that Sanjay Roy was not the only perpetrator in my daughter’s murder. Her colleagues, (then Principal) Sandeep Ghosh, and others are complicit in this institutional murder,” she claimed.
She further alleged that the state's Mamata Banerjee government has been obstructing the investigation since August 9, despite her daughter being a government employee who died while on duty.
"The Health Minister and the Chief Minister should have identified those involved. However, since day one, there have been efforts to conceal the truth. Nevertheless, we will not relent. There may be delays, but we will achieve justice," she asserted.
In addition to instructing the CBI to clarify whether this was a case of "rape" or "gang rape", Justice Ghosh also directed the agency to submit the relevant case diary to his bench.
