Kolkata, Sep 12 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented its sixth status report on the horrific rape and murder of a young female doctor associated with the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, which occurred in August of the previous year.
This sixth report was filed on Friday afternoon at a trial court located in Sealdah, central Kolkata, where the sole perpetrator of the crime, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer linked to the Kolkata Police, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Despite this, the CBI has approached the Calcutta High Court to seek the death penalty for Roy, who has also submitted a petition for acquittal to the same court.
At present, the CBI is investigating possible elements of a broader conspiracy related to the rape and murder, including the tampering and alteration of evidence that occurred during the initial investigation by the Kolkata police before the case was transferred to the CBI by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court.
This case is currently being examined simultaneously in three courts: the Supreme Court, the Calcutta High Court, and the trial court in Sealdah, Kolkata.
The parents of the victim have publicly accused the CBI of demonstrating a lack of urgency in probing the potential conspiracy surrounding the crime.
On Friday, following the submission of the sixth status report, the legal representative for the victim’s family highlighted that an official from R.G. Kar initially misled them by suggesting that the rape and murder was a case of suicide.
The family's counsel called for the CBI to investigate who was responsible for these deceptive actions.
“If the CBI continues its investigation in this fashion, the truth will remain concealed,” the counsel for the victim’s family asserted.
The presiding judge at the trial court remarked that the CBI should endeavor to identify the R.G. Kar personnel who attempted to mislead the victim’s family by labeling the rape and murder as a suicide.
