Kolkata, Aug 6 (NationPress) A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been submitted to the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday aiming to halt the 'Nabanna Avijan' (march towards the state secretariat), which has been organized by the parents of the R. G. Kar rape and murder victim.
A resident from the Howrah district, located near the state secretariat of Nabanna, lodged the PIL at the bench of Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Smita Das De, seeking an intervention to stop the proposed march.
The petitioner argued that such a “march to the state secretariat” often causes significant disruption to the residents of Howrah district, particularly those living close to the state secretariat at Mandirtala.
This is the second petition regarding this issue filed in the Calcutta High Court, as a group of local traders had already filed a similar motion at a single-judge bench.
The bench has accepted the petition, and the case is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday.
The march is planned for August 9, which commemorates the first anniversary of the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital grounds.
The victim's remains were discovered in a seminar hall inside the hospital on the morning of August 9.
The victim's parents have invited all political factions in the state, with the exception of the Trinamool Congress, to join the march, but they have requested that no party flags be displayed.
The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who initially shared the idea with the victim's parents, has pledged his full support for the protest.
On Wednesday, Adhikari criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government for allegedly using police resources to thwart the protest.
The BJP leader mentioned that a special police briefing has been scheduled for Wednesday evening, which is expected to involve most of the top IPS officers in the state.
