Kolkata, Feb 7 (NationPress) The father of the victim in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case expressed on Friday that the West Bengal government should not have been so proactive in appealing to the Calcutta High Court for the death sentence of the sole convict, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer affiliated with the Kolkata Police.
This statement was made during a press interaction, following a decision by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court which dismissed the state's petition demanding capital punishment for Roy.
“The ruling from the division bench today is entirely justified. The state government should have refrained from being so aggressive in this matter at this juncture. Nonetheless, the court has provided a response to the state,” the victim’s father remarked.
He indicated that the state government should have demonstrated similar diligence during the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police to ensure that all parties involved in the crime, beyond Roy, were apprehended.
“At that time, there was actually tampering with evidence, leading to the key conspirators remaining hidden,” noted the victim’s father.
The victim's parents have previously stated that they do not seek the death penalty for Roy, as they maintain that he was not the only perpetrator in this heinous rape and murder case.
Earlier, the division bench, comprising Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi, rejected the state government's petition but accepted a similar request from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The bench endorsed the CBI's stance, asserting that since their officials were investigating the case, the state government lacked the standing to file such a petition.
To recap, after the victim's body was discovered within a seminar hall on the grounds of R.G. Kar on August 9 last year, the Kolkata Police conducted the initial investigation, leading to Roy's arrest.
Subsequently, the CBI assumed responsibility for the investigation following a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
