Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) The West Bengal government’s aggressive pursuit of the death penalty for the RG Kar case convict is clearly politically motivated, as stated by the father of the victim, a female doctor, on Wednesday.
The state administration has appealed to the Calcutta High Court to contest the verdict given by a special court in Kolkata on January 22, which sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment while also requesting the death penalty for the only convict.
On Wednesday, the victim’s father expressed that while they desire the death penalty for Roy, they suspect that the state government's swift actions in seeking this sentence at the Calcutta High Court are influenced by political agendas.
“I cannot comprehend such an aggressive approach from the state government. I am puzzled by the underlying motives, but it is evident that there is a political motive driving this rapid response,” the victim’s father asserted.
Interestingly, his comments came just hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) contested the state government's petition for a death sentence for Roy, questioning the legitimacy of the state’s appeal.
The CBI lawyer argued that only the CBI, which is the designated investigation agency, along with the victim’s family, should be able to file such a request in a higher court, not the state government, which is not a party in this case.
The admissibility of the state government’s petition will be reviewed on January 27 by the same division bench.
The body of the doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9, 2024, and the initial inquiry was conducted by the Kolkata Police.
The Kolkata Police were the first to apprehend Roy; however, following five days of preliminary investigation, the case was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
