Shillong, Oct 8 (NationPress) Justice Soumen Sen has officially taken the oath as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court during a formal ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Shillong on Wednesday. The oath was administered by Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayashankar, accompanied by prominent guests and dignitaries.

Justice Sen replaces Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, who retired on September 5 after reaching superannuation age. Until the new appointment, Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew served as the Acting Chief Justice.

The event was graced by judges of the Meghalaya High Court, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, state cabinet members, senior government officials, legal professionals, and other notable figures.

This occasion signifies a crucial transition in the state’s judiciary, with Justice Sen becoming the 14th Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

Born in 1965 in Kolkata, Justice Sen pursued his legal studies at the University of Calcutta and began his advocacy career in 1987. Throughout his professional journey, he has earned a stellar reputation in civil, constitutional, and commercial law.

In 2011, he was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court and briefly held the position of Acting Chief Justice before his transfer to Meghalaya.

His appointment was initially proposed by the Supreme Court Collegium earlier this year and later ratified by the Union Government.

This transfer forms part of a broader initiative for judicial appointments and reorganizations aimed at fortifying the leadership across various High Courts in the nation.

With his new role, Justice Sen is anticipated to leverage his extensive judicial experience and administrative skills to enhance the functioning and efficiency of the Meghalaya High Court, ensuring that justice is dispensed promptly.

His term presents a chance to further solidify the trust and operation of the judiciary in the state.
