Kolkata, Sep 15 (NationPress) Justice Soumen Sen, the second-highest-ranking judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice after the retirement of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam on Monday. A notification from the Union Ministry of Law & Justice stated, "In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Soumen Sen, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court consequent upon superannuation of Shri Justice T.S. Sivagnanam on 15.09.2025."
Justice Sen will serve as the Acting Chief Justice until a new permanent Chief Justice is announced. Last week, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, recommended him for the next Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
Since April 13, 2011, Justice Sen has been a judge at the Calcutta High Court, with his term ending on July 26, 2027. Throughout his career, he has presided over numerous notable cases.
He gained attention due to a public dispute with his former colleague, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who is now a BJP Lok Sabha member from the Tamluk constituency in East Midnapore district, West Bengal. The conflict arose when a division bench led by Justice Sen overturned a ruling from Justice Gangopadhyay's single-judge bench. The Supreme Court eventually intervened, transferring the case from the Calcutta High Court.
