New Delhi, Mar 21 (NationPress) The Centre has officially confirmed the appointment of Justice Harish Tandon as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, following recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium.
According to a notification released by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, "In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Harish Tandon, Judge of the Calcutta High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court, effective from the date he takes charge of his office."
On March 6, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, recommended the elevation of Justice Tandon, who has served as a Judge in the Calcutta High Court, to the position of Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
The vacancy for the Chief Justice position arose following the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19 of this year.
Justice Tandon, born in November 1964, was appointed as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court in April 2010 and has been serving in that capacity ever since. He ranks as a senior puisne Judge in the Calcutta High Court and is positioned at serial number 7 in the All-India Seniority list of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices. Prior to his judicial elevation, he practiced civil law in the Calcutta High Court.
"Justice Tandon has gained extensive experience in administering justice. He is acknowledged as a capable judge and embodies the integrity and conduct expected of someone in a high judicial position. Considering all pertinent factors, the Collegium believes that Mr. Justice Harish Tandon is entirely suitable for the role of Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court," stated a message posted on the apex court's website.
