New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) On Friday, the Central Government approved the transfer of Justice Lisa Gill from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Andhra Pradesh High Court, based on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.
Union Minister of State (I/C) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced on social media, stating, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, has transferred Ms. Justice Lisa Gill, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana to be a Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.”
The Collegium had previously recommended Justice Gill's transfer to the Andhra Pradesh High Court and her future appointment as Chief Justice of that court, expected to occur after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Dhiraj Singh Thakur, on April 24.
According to the statement from the Supreme Court Collegium, this decision aligns with a policy aimed at enhancing the efficiency and quality of justice administration.
The statement further emphasized that a judge slated to assume the role of Chief Justice should ideally be transferred at least two months ahead of the vacancy, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the High Court's operations before taking charge.
Justice Gill completed her education at Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, Chandigarh, and earned a degree in humanities from Government College for Girls (GCG), Sector 11, Chandigarh.
She subsequently obtained a B.A., LL.B., and LL.M. from the Department of Laws, Panjab University. After being enrolled as an advocate in 1990, she practiced at the Punjab and Haryana High Court in various legal matters, including criminal, civil, service, revenue, and constitutional cases.
Justice Gill also represented the Union Territory of Chandigarh for several years, along with various boards and corporations.
She ascended to the Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 31, 2014.
In a related development, the Centre also approved the appointment of Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on Thursday, following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation.
