New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) The Central government has officially approved the elevation of Justice Soumen Sen from the Calcutta High Court to the position of Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court. This decision comes in response to a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium.
According to a notification released by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice, "In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Soumen Sen, Judge, Calcutta High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office."
On September 11, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, had put forward the suggestion for Justice Sen's promotion to Chief Justice due to the vacancy created by Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji's retirement on September 5. Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew was designated as the Acting Chief Justice in the interim.
Justice Sen, born on July 27, 1965, began his legal career as an advocate in January 1991, primarily practicing at the Calcutta High Court for two decades before his elevation to Judge on April 13, 2011.
After the retirement of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam on September 15, 2025, he served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court as per Article 223 of the Constitution.
During his time on the Calcutta High Court bench, Justice Sen handled numerous high-profile cases and gained public attention for a notable disagreement with his colleague, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, in a case that eventually escalated to the Supreme Court.
