Kolkata, Sep 28 (NationPress) Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the newly appointed Chief Whip of Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha and a four-time MP representing Barasat in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has ignited a controversy due to a contentious social media post made just a day before the state prepares for the four-day Durga Puja festival.
In her post, Ghosh Dastidar, who is also a medical professional, shared a photograph featuring herself alongside the idol of Goddess Durga at her home. She expressed her belief that the Goddess would vanquish those who seek to harm her.
"I wish everyone a joyful Sharadiya. The Goddess who eradicates demons and whom I revere is by my side. She will annihilate anyone attempting to harm me. I have never intentionally done wrong. As long as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee support me, I will remain undefeated," she stated in her post.
Political analysts suggest that the recent overhaul in the leadership of Trinamool Congress within the Barasat organizational district may have influenced her remarks, as several individuals close to Ghosh Dastidar were ousted during this restructuring.
The controversial statement appears to reference her constituency's internal dynamics amidst the leadership changes.
Following the backlash, Ghosh Dastidar issued a clarification on Sunday, acknowledging that her words had sparked a controversy during the festive season.
"This was merely my prayer for Maa Durga. I would never dare to speak ill of a political party founded and nurtured by Mamata Banerjee. I will cherish the party's flag until my last breath. My comments were directed at opponents seeking to undermine me," she clarified on Sunday afternoon.
Earlier this year, Ghosh Dastidar took on the role of Chief Whip of the Trinamool Congress' Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha after her predecessor, Kalyan Banerjee, resigned from the position.
She stands out as one of the five four-time MPs of Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha since 2009, alongside Sudip Bandopadhyay, Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, and actress-turned-politician Satabdi Roy.
