Doddapaneni Kalyan Krishna named Andhra Director of Cricket Operations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former Andhra pacer Doddapaneni Kalyan Krishna has been appointed as the Director of Cricket Operations by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA), the body confirmed at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mangalagiri on Wednesday, 1 July. The move signals a structured push to professionalise cricket administration in the state.
A Career in Numbers
Kalyan Krishna brings substantial playing experience to the administrative role. Across his domestic career, he featured in 51 first-class matches, 42 List A games, and 16 T20 fixtures, accumulating 217 wickets in total. He was also part of the now-defunct Deccan Chargers setup during the 2008 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Beyond the playing field, Kalyan Krishna built a well-regarded second career as a broadcaster, serving as a regular commentator on the Star Sports Telugu feed — a platform that gave him visibility and communication skills now expected to serve him in his new off-field role.
What the ACA Said
The association expressed confidence in the appointment, stating: 'The ACA looks forward to his visionary leadership in strengthening our cricket operations and driving sustainable future growth for the sport in the region.'
The AGM, held at Mangalagiri, also served as the formal platform to ratify the appointment, underscoring the institutional weight the ACA is placing on the position.
Kalyan Krishna Speaks
Reacting to the appointment, Kalyan Krishna thanked ACA President Kesineni Sivanath and Secretary Sana Sathish Babu for their confidence in him. 'I am very grateful to the President and Secretary of the ACA for the faith they have shown in me in appointing me to this role. I was there in the Andhra team as a player and now I am back with the set-up in an off-field role. It's a dream for every player to give back to the game after the end of playing time and I am very fortunate to be in a position to do so now,' he said.
He also acknowledged the shift from commentary to administration: 'It's like a career shift for me — I have made a good reputation so far as a commentator at Star Sports and now to take up this role, it's a very big challenge for me. But I am sure I will do full justice to it and will continue to expand the good work done by ACA so far in spreading the sport's reach in the state in both men's and women's cricket and produce more players who can go on to represent India,' he added.
Strategy for the 2026/27 Season
Kalyan Krishna is expected to work closely with Gary Stead, the Andhra head coach, to chart out a strategy for the 2026/27 domestic season. His remit covers both men's and women's cricket, with a stated focus on expanding grassroots reach and developing players capable of representing India at the national level.
This appointment reflects a broader trend in Indian domestic cricket, where associations are increasingly turning to former players with media or analytical backgrounds to bridge the gap between on-field performance and off-field strategy.
