Bhopal, Feb 18 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Congress stalwart, Kamal Nath, has voiced strong criticism against the budget for 2026-27 presented by the BJP-led state government. The budget was unveiled by Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda during an Assembly session on Wednesday.
Devda, a senior BJP figure overseeing the state's finance department for several years, proposed a budget with a total outlay of Rs 4,38,317 crore. The budget faced interruptions from the opposition, who expressed concerns regarding the escalating debt burden on the state's citizens.
Responding to the budget, Kamal Nath referred to it as mere “lip service,” entirely neglecting the interests of the public. He highlighted the absence of key promises made by the BJP in their election manifesto during the 2023 Assembly elections, accusing the party of once again betraying the people of Madhya Pradesh.
“The significant commitments made by the BJP to the electorate before the November 2023 Assembly elections were glaringly absent from the Finance Minister's budget address. This budget is detrimental to the public, and the BJP government has let the people down. There’s widespread disappointment among the residents of Madhya Pradesh regarding this budget,” Kamal Nath stated.
Moreover, he questioned why Finance Minister Devda did not address the unfulfilled promises from the previous budget.
He also noted that the budget speech lacked clarity on the government's strategy concerning the anticipated Rs 50,000 crore reduction in tax revenues from the central government over the next five years.
“These factors clearly indicate that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh is not prioritizing the welfare of its citizens and is merely acting as a puppet to the central government, compromising the state's interests,” Kamal Nath asserted.
Earlier, during a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the 2026-27 budget as historic in several respects and a testament to the commitment to progress incrementally, ensuring inclusivity.
“This budget is aimed at benefiting the poor, youth, farmers, and women, along with boosting industrial growth,” Yadav remarked.
