Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ballari (Karnataka), Jan 2 (NationPress) Following the violent events leading to the death of a Congress worker in Ballari, the Karnataka BJP on Friday accused the state government of unfairly targeting mining tycoon and BJP MLA Janardhana Reddy. They have called for an investigation into the shoot-out to be conducted by a sitting High Court judge.
Supporters of MLAs Janardhana Reddy and Bharat Reddy were involved in a clash concerning the installation of banners to honor Valmiki Jayanti outside Janardhana Reddy’s home on Thursday evening. The conflict arose when Reddy’s supporters opposed the banners, leading to escalating violence that included stone throwing, lathi charges, and gunfire from both the police and private armed individuals.
In the turmoil, Congress worker Rajashekar was shot and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Karnataka BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra stated, "The violence that took place yesterday near MLA Janardhana Reddy’s residence in Ballari is a premeditated act orchestrated by Congress supporters, and I vehemently condemn it."
"I call for immediate security measures to be taken for MLA Janardhana Reddy, former minister Sriramulu, and other significant members of our party. I also demand the establishment of a commission led by a sitting High Court judge to thoroughly investigate this incident," he added.
"This incident, disguised as a celebration for the unveiling of the Maharshi Valmiki statue, was a deliberate attack on Janardhana Reddy and his family. The essence of democracy has faded in Ballari. With the complicity of the local MLA, their supporters seem to engage in criminal acts, disrupting the peace of our society and instilling fear in the community," he asserted.
"Following Janardhana Reddy’s return to the BJP, the party's local presence has strengthened, and the renewed alliance between Reddy and former Deputy CM Sriramulu has become intolerable for political disruptors," he remarked.
Vijayendra criticized the local police for allegedly becoming extensions of the Karnataka Congress party, stating that had they acted preventively, this violent incident could have been avoided.
BJP State co-incharge Sudhakar Reddy emphasized that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah must ensure adequate security for Reddy.
He strongly condemned the violence and noted the alarming rise of the drug mafia in Karnataka. He remarked that law enforcement has disintegrated, leading to a state of lawlessness.
He accused Congress MLAs of intimidating police officials and acting outside the law. He reiterated his condemnation of the attack on Janardhana Reddy and demanded immediate arrests of the assailants by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
He warned that if security for Janardhana Reddy is not promptly addressed, the Siddaramaiah government will bear responsibility for any future repercussions.
Following the fatal shooting of a Congress worker, tensions have escalated in Karnataka’s Ballari, with police indicating that the shot originated from a private firearm. Earlier reports suggested uncertainty regarding the identity of the shooter.
In-charge Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Bandaru announced that four cases have been registered so far, including a murder charge initiated by Congress workers. The family of the deceased has lodged a complaint against certain BJP leaders.
