Ballary (Karnataka), Jan 2 (NationPress) Tensions have risen in Karnataka’s Ballari district following the tragic shooting of a Congress worker, confirmed by the police to have originated from a private revolver.

The victim, identified as Rajashekar, prompted a response from the In-charge Superintendent of Police (SP) Ranjit Kumar Bandaru, who announced on Friday that four cases have been registered, including a murder charge stemming from a complaint by Congress members. The deceased's family has implicated certain BJP leaders in their complaint.

The Congress MLA for Ballari city, Nara Bharat Reddy, accused mining magnate and BJP MLA Janardhana Reddy of orchestrating the attack and demanded his immediate apprehension.

In response, police have enacted prohibitory measures around the residence of mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy.

It is noteworthy that on Thursday night, supporters from both Janardhana Reddy and Bharat Reddy clashed over the placement of banners for Valmiki Jayanti celebrations outside Janardhana Reddy’s home. Resistance to the banner installation led to a confrontation that escalated into stone-throwing, police lathicharge, and firing from both police and private armed personnel.

In the turmoil, Rajashekar was struck by a bullet and later succumbed to his injuries. Initial police reports indicated uncertainty regarding the shooter.

SP Ranjit Kumar stated to the media, “The postmortem on the deceased Congress worker has been finalized. Initial findings suggest that the bullet that led to Rajashekar's death was not fired by police. Investigations indicate it was discharged by a private individual. We are continuing our inquiry and awaiting the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report. Further updates will follow.”

“We have made comprehensive security preparations for his funeral. The situation has stabilized. Additional forces have been dispatched from nearby districts,” he added.

“The fatal bullet was indeed from a private revolver. The investigation is ongoing, and we are compiling more information,” the SP confirmed.

“We have gathered all CCTV footage for analysis. To date, four cases have been filed. Supporters of MLA Bharat Reddy have lodged a murder complaint related to Rajashekar's death. Additionally, a complaint has been filed by close aide Satish Reddy for attempted murder,” SP Ranjit Kumar stated.

Another individual has accused Janardhana Reddy of atrocities, prompting the police to initiate a suo motu case against all involved parties. Further investigation is currently in progress.

Detailing the incident, SP Ranjit Kumar said, “On January 1, in the Ahambhavi area, a dispute arose outside Janardhana Reddy’s residence regarding a flex banner for the Valmiki statue inauguration.

“There was stone pelting between the supporters of MLAs Janardhana Reddy and Bharat Reddy. An accidental firing occurred during this confrontation, resulting in the death of a Congress worker. Tensions subsequently escalated. The police have managed to control the situation and disperse the crowd.”

“This incident cannot be labeled as a police failure. The police acted promptly as events unfolded. The situation escalated rapidly, and while it was initially challenging to manage, order was restored,” the SP clarified.

Police reports indicated that over 12 rounds were fired during the conflicts. Additionally, chilli powder and stone piles were discovered on the roads.

The deceased, Rajashekar’s father, had affiliations with the BJP, while Rajashekar was a part of the Congress party. MLA Bharat Reddy subsequently staged a protest at Janardhana Reddy’s residence following the shooting.

Eshwar Reddy, the deceased's brother, recounted that the incident took place while Rajashekar was with MLA Bharat Reddy. “My brother Rajashekar was aligned with the Congress party. My father supported BJP leader Somashekara Reddy. We have lodged a complaint against the BJP,” he stated.

As of now, the atmosphere in Ballari city remains tense and unpredictable.
