Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, BJP Member of the Legislative Council and Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, on 15 August 2025 declared that India had emerged as a nation commanding global attention under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, citing the country's rise to become the world's fourth-largest economy. He was speaking after hoisting the national flag at the BJP state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan in Bengaluru, on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day.

India's Economic Rise at the Centre of Address

Narayanaswamy invoked a pointed historical contrast to underscore the country's transformation. 'Earlier, there was a situation where the country had to pledge its gold to run the economy. Today, India has emerged as the world's fourth-largest economy,' he said, addressing party workers gathered at the event. He expressed confidence that India would ascend to become the world's leading economic power by 2047, a target he attributed to the direction set by the Prime Minister.

He added that BJP leaders were actively working to highlight India's strength and potential, framing the party's role as central to realising that ambition.

Sharp Words on Opposition Unity and Modi's Leadership

Narayanaswamy claimed that no contemporary leader matched Modi's stature and argued that efforts by opposition parties to forge a united front against the Prime Minister would not succeed. He praised Modi's leadership style, saying he treated everyone equally and worked towards national unity.

While acknowledging that criticism was an integral part of democracy, he cautioned against what he described as vilification of political leaders. 'People in India, as well as abroad, respect Modi and will not tolerate abuse directed at him,' he said.

Allegations Against Congress Over Freedom Struggle Remarks

Taking aim at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Narayanaswamy alleged that remarks attributed to Kharge had insulted those who fought for India's freedom, questioning whether such comparisons were appropriate in the context of the freedom struggle. He also alleged that the Congress had repeatedly targeted the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), calling such criticism an obsession among Congress leaders.

Karnataka Governance and Youth Concerns

Referring to the state's political history, Narayanaswamy noted that the BJP, Janata Dal (Secular), and Congress had each governed Karnataka at different points, urging all parties in power to prioritise people-centric administration and address public concerns.

He invoked Prime Minister Modi's characterisation of Generation Z as the nation's future, alleging that the Congress had attempted to mislead young people for political gain. He further claimed that concerns raised by Gen Z over issues such as recruitment irregularities and examination-related matters had not received an adequate response from the state government.

Senior BJP Leaders Present at Event

Several senior BJP leaders and office-bearers attended the Independence Day event at Jagannath Bhavan, including B.L. Santhosh, N. Ravikumar, Keshav Prasad, Haratalu Halappa, and Dr. Lakshmi Ashwin Gowda. Narayanaswamy concluded by urging citizens to reflect on India's progress over the last 80 years and honour the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle. With the 2047 vision firmly in focus, the party's messaging on Independence Day centred squarely on national ambition and political contrast.
