Karnataka Congress Shakes Up: MLC Abdul Jabbar Suspended for Anti-Party Conduct
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 15 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has suspended MLC Abdul Jabbar from the party's primary membership due to his involvement in anti-party activities.
The suspension order was signed by Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar.
The suspension letter reads: “Abdul Jabbar, Member of the Legislative Council, is hereby suspended from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress (INC) with immediate effect, due to his anti-party activities during the recent by-election in the Davanagere South Assembly constituency.”
Abdul Jabbar, who previously led the state party’s Minority Wing, had already been asked to resign from his position. Following his resignation, Deputy CM Shivakumar disbanded the Minority Wing.
It is noteworthy that Congress MLC Naseer Ahmad was also dismissed from his role as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s Political Advisor on April 14 for similar reasons.
This situation is poised to intensify the ongoing leadership struggle within the party, particularly between the factions of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
According to sources within Congress, both Naseer Ahmad and Abdul Jabbar are associated with Siddaramaiah’s faction and are considered allies of Housing and Waqf Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan, a trusted aide of the Chief Minister.
Since the Congress government formed in the state, six-term MLA Tanveer Sait from Mysuru district was marginalized, while Zameer Ahmad Khan was brought into the cabinet.
With a cabinet reshuffle reportedly imminent, insiders suggest that Zameer Ahmad Khan, who may be at risk of losing his ministerial role, attempted to position himself as a leading figure in the Muslim community and allegedly plotted to instigate dissent in the Davanagere South constituency against the party's candidate.
It is important to remember that Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan had previously urged the party to nominate a Muslim candidate for the Davanagere South constituency. However, the party opted for Samarth Mallikarjun, the grandson of the late veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
Reports indicate that Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan, along with MLCs Abdul Jabbar and Naseer Ahmad, allegedly conspired, acted, and financed efforts to ensure the defeat of the Congress candidate, intending to send a message to the party leadership about his significance in securing Muslim votes statewide.
However, Zameer Ahmad Khan has refuted all allegations, claiming he was occupied with a task in Kerala during the time in question.
AICC leaders who visited Karnataka during the by-elections reportedly noted these events and submitted a report to the party’s high command.
After Naseer Ahmad's removal as Political Advisor, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened a two-hour meeting with Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan on Tuesday.
Insiders reveal that the party's high command is dissatisfied with Zameer Ahmad Khan based on the report, and the Chief Minister has requested him to personally explain his involvement in the alleged anti-party activities during the Davanagere South by-election.
