Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 14 (NationPress) All legislators along with over 1,000 Congress party workers from Karnataka are set to participate in the ‘Vote Chori’ protest at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on Sunday. This event aims to bolster the efforts of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, as stated by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday.
While addressing the media in Bengaluru, Shivakumar remarked, “The ‘Vote Chori’ initiative commenced in our state with an impressive convention at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Another significant event will unfold on Sunday at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, with over 1,000 party workers from Karnataka already present.”
He noted that party leaders had journeyed to Delhi via train and air from diverse regions of the state, indicating that more than 100 MLAs and MLCs are expected to be part of the gathering. “I will also be joining them,” affirmed the state Congress chief.
Shivakumar highlighted that even following electoral losses, party leader Rahul Gandhi organized a similar event to raise public awareness. “AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge is also spearheading the protest. We are all contributing to this campaign,” he added.
When inquired about meeting senior party leaders on Saturday night or Sunday morning, the Deputy CM mentioned it would be quite late upon his arrival in Delhi. “I also need to address the notice issued to me by the Delhi Police regarding the ‘National Herald’ case. If time permits, I will attend to that,” he noted.
Previously on Saturday, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar reached Delhi to partake in the ‘Vote Chori’ protest scheduled for December 14. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is also expected to arrive in Delhi on Sunday to join the demonstration.
Discussing the ‘Vote Chori’ matter, Shivakumar accused that names of minority voters have been removed from electoral rolls nationwide. “Our leader, Rahul Gandhi, has raised this concern. They have not provided answers to our inquiries; instead, they request us to furnish information. The information is not being disclosed under the Right to Information Act (RTI). I too have sought this information, but it was not granted,” he stated.
The Congress party has asserted that the protest's purpose is to draw national attention to alleged discrepancies in the electoral process and demand accountability from authorities regarding the removal of voters’ names. The party leadership has emphasized that the protest is part of a larger effort to protect democracy and ensure free and fair elections throughout the nation.
