Should There Be a High-Level Investigation into the Kurnool Bus Fire Tragedy?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Oct 24 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has called for a comprehensive investigation into the bus fire incident that occurred in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, which resulted in the tragic loss of 19 lives.
Addressing the media at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, Shivakumar expressed his suspicions of foul play or negligence surrounding this devastating event.
He referenced a similar occurrence from the previous week, where a private bus traveling from Bengaluru to Hyderabad caught fire in the same region. During a recent visit to Raichur, local residents shared a video with him. He recounted that a party member, a District President from Raichur, confronted the driver urgently, ensuring that all passengers evacuated in time. Fortunately, around 20 medical students on board escaped with only minor injuries, though they lost their laptops in the process.
Shivakumar criticized the lack of safety measures taken during this incident and highlighted that no action was taken by the police.
He instructed State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and Home Minister G. Parameshwara to investigate further, noting that the transport operator is based in Bengaluru.
Shivakumar urged the Andhra Pradesh government to carry out a detailed inquiry and implement necessary safety protocols.
In a tragic account, Venu, a software engineer from Bengaluru who survived the bus fire, described his experience: "My fellow passengers and I were able to break the emergency exit glass and escape. Sadly, we couldn't save those who perished before our eyes. We felt utterly helpless." Venu, who was returning to Bengaluru after visiting his sister, recounted the horrifying encounter while seated in L-13. "At 3 a.m., the bus halted, and as it resumed, flames engulfed the interior. Breathing became nearly impossible. A fellow passenger injured himself breaking the emergency glass but courageously assisted 15 others in escaping," he shared.
He elaborated, "The bus initially collided with a two-wheeler before bursting into flames. We witnessed fellow passengers trapped inside, facing a horrific fate. We could only stand back, paralyzed by fear. After an hour, I managed to board another bus and return to Bengaluru," Venu recounted.
