Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 18 (NationPress) Addressing worries about the safety of eggs in Karnataka, state Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao stated on Thursday that there is no reason for anxiety regarding egg consumption.

He made this declaration while responding to a question raised during the Assembly’s Question and Answer session by senior BJP leader V. Sunil Kumar.

“There is no need for concern. One company has been accused of using antibiotics. The Centre’s Food Safety Department, along with state agencies, is investigating the issue,” the minister noted.

He further mentioned that last year, 147 egg samples were analyzed, with only one sample failing to meet quality standards, while all others were confirmed as safe. “In this context, schoolchildren and residents throughout the state can confidently consume eggs. Eggs are beneficial for health,” he added.

It is important to highlight that social media rumors claimed that certain eggs contained hazardous substances such as nitrofuran and nitroimidazole, which could potentially lead to cancer, stirring public worry. Taking this prevalent anxiety seriously, the government has ordered the collection of egg samples for testing.

Minister Dinesh emphasized that if any carcinogenic substances are found during the tests conducted in response to these suspicions, stringent legal action would be taken against those accountable.

In the meantime, BJP MLA Harish Poonja questioned the Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa about teachers incurring additional costs due to the recent rise in egg and banana prices.

He pointed out that the government provides ₹5 per egg, while the current market rate is approximately ₹7.50. This discrepancy, he noted, is forcing teachers and school development committee members to cover the extra expenses.

“For instance, at Venur High School, where hundreds of students are enrolled, teachers are spending around ₹15,000 to manage the additional costs of eggs and bananas. This situation has become burdensome for educators who must both teach and find additional funds,” MLA Poonja remarked, urging the Education Minister to address the issue.

Responding, Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa acknowledged the pressure regarding the egg issue. “We provide eggs to ensure students receive adequate nutrition. The government funds eggs for two days, and industrialist Azim Premji is contributing ₹1,591 crore to supply eggs for the remaining four days to schoolchildren,” he stated.

He added that discussions with Azim Premji are ongoing and have been positive. “By the next academic year, we aim to resolve this issue,” the minister assured.

Speaker U.T. Khader interjected, questioning what the government would do if egg and banana prices increase further, advising discussions with the egg sellers’ association.

Senior BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar requested that two days be set aside in the Assembly to discuss education and schoolchildren's issues.

Minister Madhu Bangarappa assured the House that the egg-related concerns would be addressed promptly.

Point of View

It's vital to recognize the balance between public health concerns and the need for reliable food sources. The government's transparency in addressing potential issues surrounding egg safety is commendable. It’s essential for authorities to provide clear communication, ensuring the community feels secure in their dietary choices while also considering the economic pressures on educators.
